Studierte 1843–1846 am Leipziger Konservatorium u. a. bei Mendelssohn und ab 1848 bei Chopin in Paris; 1863 stellvertretender Direktor der Royal Academy of Music in London und gründete 1875 den Londoner Bach-Chor; 1852 heiratete er Jenny Lind.
