It is a pity I should beΔ forced to begin our correspondance with excuses, but I depend upon your indulgence onΔ a poor man of a weak health and overloden with all sorts of bussinessΔ.

I am most obliged to you, for all the kind things you are pleased to honor me with, and feel myself much flattered Δ by your invitationΔ to add my essaysΔ to the works of theΔ great Father Haydn.      accept thenΔ, herejoined the ten scottish airs, which IΔ wish that they may in some degree corresponde with your expectations, ifΔ you will notΔ measure them at the standard ofΔ my great antecessor.

I have not profitted of your permission to change some notes in the melodies, because every little declination from their original Δ beeing, would have denaturated them. With respect to your wishes concerning three ouvertures for the Pianoforte, I beg, Δ you would be pleasedΔ to explain your Ideas a little more decidedlyΔ, and also to fix the complimentΔ yourself. I will then see, if I find time Δ besides my more voluminous worksΔ to satisfy you.

I am with esteam and regard
Sir
your most obedient
Servant
Charles Maria von WeberΔ

Mr. George Thomson. Esqre. Trustee’s Office. — Edinburgh.
